In 1944, there was a push for US citizens currently training in Canada to return to the US forces. As both the editors of the Breeze newspaper were from the US, they were faced with the prospect of the paper crumbling as they left. To drum up more interest and participation in the newspaper they created the Press Club. The paper evidently meant a lot to the people running it, as they did their absolute best to convince people to join. The Breeze was a fascinating paper, written and edited by students and instructors alike. In their February 11th issue, 1944, they described it as “a ray of democracy shining through the heavy cloud of necessary military dictatorship.” This description of the paper not only shows the determination to keep this line of communication open, but also the feeling of living in a warring society. A total war meant sacrifice of some liberties, and this was felt and understood by the people at the time.
